Why Lightweight Tactical Pants Are (Mostly) Awesome for Hiking

I just did a video review of some tactical pants from TearWild and figured it was a good occasion to write a pros/cons article on tactical pants.  😊

Ever wondered if lightweight tactical pants are the right choice for your next outdoor adventure? Well, I've got you covered. Let’s dive into the world of tactical pants and see why they might be the hiking pants of your dreams—or not.

Pros of Lightweight Tactical Pants

1. Durability

These pants are designed and created for durability. Made from strong materials, they can withstand all kinds of rough terrain, sharp branches, and unexpected scrapes. Perfect for those intense trails where you need gear that won't give up on you.

2. Pockets Galore

If you’re like me and carry a mini-survival kit every time you leave the house (because you never know), you'll love the numerous pockets. There's a spot for your phone, map, snacks, multi-tool, and more. It’s like having a backpack built into your pants.

3. Water-Resistant

Many lightweight tactical pants are made with water-resistant fabrics or have a water-resistant chemical infused into the fabric. So, when you’re caught in a drizzle or need to cross a small stream, you’re less likely to end up with soaked pants.  However, there’s a big difference between water-resistant and waterproof.

4. Comfort

Designed for movement, these pants often have stretch fabric and a gusseted crotch, giving you the freedom to scramble over rocks and tackle steep trails without feeling restricted.  Many tactical pants are also made with quick-drying materials so you don’t have that cold and wet material against your skin for too long.

5. Stylish (Kind of)

They may not win any fashion awards, but tactical pants have that rugged, ready-for-anything look that screams adventure. Plus, they come in neutral or natural colors that match pretty much anything.

Cons of Lightweight Tactical Pants

1. Breathability Issues

Some tactical pants aren’t the most breathable, which can turn your legs into mini-saunas on hot days. While some brands offer better ventilation, it’s worth checking out if you’re prone to overheating.

2. Weight

Despite being “lightweight,” some tactical pants can still be a bit heavier than your average hiking pants due to the robust materials and multiple pockets. If you’re counting every ounce in your pack, this could be a dealbreaker.

3. Cost

Quality tactical pants can be pricey. If you’re on a budget, you might find that regular hiking pants offer better value for your money. It’s all about weighing the cost versus the benefits.  I recommend watching for sales and even check out the local thrift or second-hand store for gently worn tactical pants.

4. Overkill for Simple Trails

For a gentle nature walk or easy trail, tactical pants might be a bit of an overkill. If you’re just out for a leisurely stroll, a pair of standard hiking pants or even shorts might serve you better.

5. Style is Subjective

While some folks dig the utilitarian look, others might find it too “tacticool” for their taste. If you’re hiking with a fashion-conscious crowd, they might not appreciate the rugged aesthetic as much as you do.

Lightweight tactical pants can be an excellent choice for hiking, especially if you’re tackling tough trails and need something durable and functional. However, they’re not without their drawbacks, particularly when it comes to breathability and cost. Weigh the pros and cons, and you’ll find the perfect pants for your next hike.
